Trip Description:

Chulu East Peak Trek and Climb is a remarkable adventure that leads to the summit of one of Nepal’s highest trekking peaks, standing tall at 6,584 meters (21,601 feet) above the Manang Valley. It is officially classified as a trekking peak by the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA). The climb, graded PD+, presents a mix of straightforward trekking and moderate technical challenges.

The journey begins with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Dharapani, entering the captivating Manang region. The trek then follows the Marsyangdi River upstream, gradually ascending through charming villages that showcase the rich Buddhist culture of the high Himalayas.

After reaching Pisang on the popular Annapurna Circuit route, the real adventure begins. The trail leaves the main circuit and enters a remote section of the Manang Valley, leading towards the base of Chulu East Peak. Passing through Julu, the last village before the mountain, trekkers venture into icy wilderness terrain filled with glaciers, snowfields, and rugged rock formations.

Ample time is set aside for acclimatization and climbing practice before the final summit push. The climb features some technical sections, demanding caution and teamwork. Upon reaching the summit, climbers are rewarded with sweeping views of the Annapurna range, the Chulus, Pisang Peak, and beyond.

After the successful ascent, the trek rejoins the Annapurna Circuit at Manang and continues toward Thorong-La Pass (5,416m)—the highest point of the trek. From there, the route descends into the Mustang region to the sacred site of Muktinath, a pilgrimage destination for Hindus and Buddhists alike.

The journey concludes in Jomsom, the district headquarters of Mustang, situated along the ancient Trans-Himalayan salt trade route. A scenic flight brings you to Pokhara, Nepal’s adventure capital, followed by a short flight back to Kathmandu for a well-deserved rest and celebration.

Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival in Kathmandu (1,300m)

Welcome to Nepal! Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, our team will greet you and transfer you to your hotel in Kathmandu. After check-in, you can relax or explore the vibrant streets of Thamel. In the evening, there will be a short briefing about the adventure ahead.

Day 2

Drive to Besisahar (760m)

We begin our journey with a scenic drive to Besisahar, the gateway to the Annapurna region. The route passes through terraced fields, charming villages, and flowing rivers. Overnight stay in Besisahar.

Day 3

Drive from Besisahar to Dharapani (1,860m)

From Besisahar, we drive along a rugged jeep track to reach Dharapani. This stretch introduces us to the lush forests and the Himalayan foothills. Dharapani is a key point on the Annapurna Circuit trail.

Day 4

Trek to Koto (2,600m) – Approx. 7 hours

Our first full day of trekking begins as we head toward Koto. The trail winds through dense pine and fir forests alongside the Marsyangdi River. Koto is a small village inhabited mostly by people of Tibetan origin.

Day 5

Trek to Lower Pisang (3,200m) – Approx. 6 hours

Today we continue our ascent into alpine territory. The views become more expansive, with Annapurna II and Pisang Peak in sight. Lower Pisang offers a great introduction to high-altitude terrain and culture.

Day 6

Trek to Ngawal (3,660m) – Approx. 7 hours

We follow the upper route to Ngawal, a traditional village perched on the side of the valley. This route offers panoramic views of the Annapurna range. The altitude increases, preparing us for higher climbs ahead.

Day 7

Acclimatization Day in Ngawal

A crucial rest day for acclimatization. We'll take a short hike to an intermediate altitude (possibly to a ridge or viewpoint) to help our bodies adjust to the thinner air. Rest and relax in the afternoon.

Day 8

Trek to Yak Kharka – Approx. 5 hours

The trail becomes more remote as we trek through pasturelands and yak-grazing areas. Yak Kharka is a small settlement with basic teahouses, surrounded by high peaks and open valleys.

Day 9

Trek to High Camp – Approx. 7 hours

We leave the main Annapurna trail and head toward the Chulu East climbing route. The trail gets steeper as we gain altitude. High Camp serves as a staging ground for our summit push and offers incredible views.

Day 10

Trek to Climbing Camp One

Today we move higher to establish Camp One. The team prepares gear, ropes, and logistics for the summit attempt. This is a short but important day to rest and mentally prepare for the climb.

Day 11

Summit Chulu East Peak (6,584m) and Return to Camp One

The most challenging and rewarding day! We start before dawn to tackle snow slopes, glaciers, and ridges. Upon reaching the summit, we’re rewarded with breathtaking views of Annapurna II, III, IV, Manaslu, and more. We descend carefully back to Camp One.

Day 12

Descend back to Yak Kharka – Approx. 9 hours

After the exhilarating climb, we retrace our steps down to Yak Kharka. The long descent gives your body a chance to recover from the high-altitude efforts.

Day 13

Trek to Manang (3,540m) – Approx. 6 hours

We continue descending to the beautiful village of Manang. This is a great place to enjoy local culture, interact with villagers, and soak in mountain views with a hot meal.

Day 14

Trek to Ledar – Approx. 6 hours

We rejoin the Annapurna Circuit trail and climb steadily to Ledar. The landscape now features more barren terrain and rocky outcrops, typical of high-altitude trekking.

Day 15

Trek to Thorong High Camp – Approx. 7 hours

A steep climb takes us to Thorong High Camp, situated just below the famous Thorong-La Pass. This camp provides shelter and rest before our final high pass crossing.

Day 16

Cross Thorong-La Pass (5,416m) and Trek to Muktinath – Approx. 9 hours

A major highlight of the trek: crossing Thorong-La Pass, one of the highest trekking passes in the world. After conquering the pass, we descend to the sacred site of Muktinath, a pilgrimage destination for both Hindus and Buddhists.

Day 17

Drive or Trek to Jomsom (2,720m) – Approx. 5 hours

Today we trek or drive to Jomsom, the windy capital of Mustang District. Enjoy a final view of the dry landscapes and ancient villages. Rest and prepare for your flight the next day.
