Khumbu Himalaya Region Overview

The Khumbu Himalaya region, nestled in northeastern Nepal, is one of the most iconic trekking and mountaineering destinations in the world. 1. History of the Khumbu Region

8. Gokyo Valley and Gokyo Ri

Gokyo is a tranquil village by a series of turquoise glacial lakes, situated at 4,790 meters (15,715 feet). Gokyo Ri, a nearby peak, offers one of the most comprehensive panoramic views in the Everest region, with vistas of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu. The Gokyo Lakes themselves are considered sacred and are among the world’s highest freshwater lakes.


9. Cho La Pass

Connecting Gokyo to the Everest Base Camp trail, Cho La Pass (5,420 meters) is a steep and icy traverse that demands both physical fitness and acclimatization. Despite its difficulty, the reward is worth the effort—breathtaking glacier crossings and close-up views of dramatic alpine landscapes.


10. Kalapathar and Lobuche

Kalapathar (5,550 meters) is the most accessible vantage point for observing Mount Everest up close. Trekkers often ascend early in the morning to catch sunrise over the Himalayas. Nearby Lobuche (4,910 meters) is a high-altitude village that serves as a staging point for EBC and Kalapathar climbs.


11. Thame

Located off the main trekking route, Thame is a quiet Sherpa village known for its spiritual heritage and the historic Thame Monastery. At 3,820 meters, the village offers insight into traditional Sherpa life and serves as a peaceful retreat from the more crowded trails.


12. Renjo La Pass

Renjo La Pass (5,360 meters) connects the Gokyo Valley with the Namche area. It is less traveled compared to the other high passes but offers equally stunning views of Everest, Makalu, and Cho Oyu. The trail is a hidden gem for trekkers seeking solitude and scenic grandeur.


13. Chukung Ri and Kongma La Pass

Chukung Ri (5,550 meters) is a popular viewpoint above the village of Chukung, offering unmatched perspectives of the Imja Valley and surrounding peaks. The adjacent Kongma La Pass (5,535 meters), the highest of the three passes, links Chukung to Lobuche, and presents a challenging but rewarding crossing for trekkers.

Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival in Kathmandu (1,300m)

Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, you will be warmly greeted and transferred to your hotel. Enjoy a welcome rest after your flight and prepare for the adventure ahead.

Day 2

Kathmandu Sightseeing (Boudhanath & Swayambhunath)

Today, explore some of Kathmandu’s iconic UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Visit Boudhanath Stupa, one of the largest spherical stupas in the world, and Swayambhunath, also known as the Monkey Temple, which offers panoramic views of the Kathmandu Valley.

Day 3

Fly to Lukla (2,840m) & Trek to Monjo – 6 hrs

An early morning flight takes you to Lukla, one of the world’s most dramatic airports. Begin your trek through Sherpa villages, lush forests, and along the Dudh Koshi River to the quiet village of Monjo, the gateway to Sagarmatha National Park.

Day 4

Trek to Namche Bazaar (3,435m) – 6 hrs

Enter Sagarmatha National Park, and trek through pine forests and across suspension bridges. After a steep ascent, arrive in Namche Bazaar, the vibrant Sherpa capital and main acclimatization hub.

Day 5

Acclimatization Day – Hike to Everest View Hotel (3,880m)

Spend the day acclimatizing with a short hike to Everest View Hotel, offering a stunning panorama of Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam. Explore the surrounding villages or visit the Sherpa Culture Museum in Namche.

Day 6

Trek to Thame (3,820m) – 6 hrs

Leave the main EBC trail and head west to Thame, a quiet village nestled in a scenic valley. It is the birthplace of famed mountaineers and home to the ancient Thame Monastery.

Day 7

Trek to Lungden (4,410m) – 6 hrs

Continue the journey through remote terrain with sparse settlements. Reach Lungden, a peaceful village used for acclimatization before crossing the Renjo La Pass.

Day 8

Cross Renjo La Pass (5,360m) to Gokyo (4,790m) – 8 hrs

A challenging but rewarding day as you climb Renjo La Pass, offering one of the best views of Mount Everest, Makalu, Cho Oyu, and the Gokyo Lakes. Descend to the picturesque village of Gokyo, nestled by turquoise glacial lakes.

Day 9

Hike Gokyo Ri (5,357m) & Trek to Dragnag – 8 hrs

Ascend Gokyo Ri for a sunrise view over the Everest massif. Then descend and cross the Ngozumpa Glacier to reach Dragnag, a small settlement at the base of the Cho La Pass.

Day 10

Cross Cho La Pass (5,368m) to Dzongla (4,830m) – 9 hrs

One of the toughest days of the trek. Climb Cho La Pass, a steep, icy route with breathtaking views. Carefully descend to Dzongla, a peaceful and scenic resting point.

Day 11

Trek to Lobuche (4,910m) – 6 hrs

A relatively easy day with gradual ascents through alpine landscapes. Arrive at Lobuche, a crucial stop on the way to Everest Base Camp.

Day 12

Trek to Gorakshep (5,180m) – 5 hrs

Head to Gorakshep, the final village before Everest Base Camp. The path follows glacial moraines with views of towering peaks all around.

Day 13

Hike Kalapatthar (5,550m) & Return to Lobuche – 8 hrs

Early morning hike to Kalapatthar, the best viewpoint for close-up views of Everest, Nuptse, and Pumori. Return to Lobuche for the night.

Day 14

(Missing in original) – Suggested: Acclimatization or Buffer Day

Use this day as a rest or buffer in case of delays, weather issues, or for additional acclimatization before the final pass.

Day 15

Cross Kongma La Pass (5,535m) to Chukung (4,790m) – 9 hrs

Trek through one of the most remote sections and climb the highest pass of the trek – Kongma La. The rugged trail provides sweeping views before descending to Chukung.

Day 16

Hike Chukung Ri (5,550m) & Trek to Dingboche (4,320m) – 5 hrs

Climb Chukung Ri for more spectacular Himalayan vistas, then trek down to the village of Dingboche, a charming high-altitude settlement.

Day 17

Trek to Namche Bazaar – 7 hrs

Retrace your steps through Pangboche and Tengboche Monastery to reach Namche Bazaar, where you can enjoy a warm shower, good food, and internet.

Day 18

Trek to Lukla – 8 hrs

Trek back along the Dudh Koshi River through Monjo and Phakding to reach Lukla, where your circuit ends. Celebrate the successful completion of the Three Passes Trek.

Day 19

Fly to Kathmandu

Take an early morning flight from Lukla back to Kathmandu, where you’ll be transferred to your hotel. Enjoy a relaxing evening in the city.

Day 20

Final Departure

You will be transferred to Tribhuvan International Airport for your final departure. Wishing you a safe journey and unforgettable memories of the Everest region!
