- Autumn (September–November): Another ideal season with clear weather. Days are shorter and colder, especially in the mornings and evenings. Snowfall may occur above 3,000 meters.
Geography and Vegetation:
Nepal is a landlocked country home to the world’s tallest mountain range—the Himalayas. Landscapes range from the southern Terai plains, rising through the Siwalik Hills, Mahabharata Range, and finally into the Greater Himalayas.
This trek explores the Far North Mid-West Himalayas, including Upper Manaslu Valley near the Manang district. The region is surrounded by peaks such as Annapurna, Manaslu, Damodar, and Himlung Himal.
Vegetation varies greatly, including:
- Lower Hills: Rhododendron, blue pine, fir, oak, hemlock, magnolia, and bamboo.
- Above 3,000 m: Tree line fades into alpine shrubs like juniper and azalea.
Religion, Culture, and History:
Nepal is predominantly Hindu (approx. 70%) with a significant Buddhist population (25%). The mountainous regions are mostly Buddhist, which you’ll experience throughout this trek.
The people of Upper Manaslu are called Bhotias, descendants of Tibetan origin who migrated here in the 16th century. The local name for Manaslu is Kutang, meaning a fertile land for crops like barley and wheat. The word Manaslu is derived from an ancient term symbolizing the ‘Mind or Soul of God,’ similar to the sacred Lake Manasarovar near Mount Kailash in Tibet.
Historically, this area was part of the Trans-Himalayan Salt Trade Route connecting Nepal and Tibet. Although trade has reduced in recent times, cultural and economic ties remain strong.
Trip Summary:
Larke Peak offers a unique trekking and climbing experience in Nepal, away from the crowded routes. The peak stands at 6,249 m (20,502 ft), close to the famous Larke-La Pass (5,106 m / 16,752 ft)—the border between the Gorkha and Manang districts.
The route follows the classic Manaslu Circuit Trek, beginning from the lower hills of Machha Khola and rising through Jagat, Philim, Deng, Namrung, Lho, and Sama Gaon. After a rest day at Sama Gaon, the journey continues to Samdo, Dharamsala, and finally the Larke Base Camp.
The climb to Larke Peak is categorized as PD+ (a French/Swiss Alpine Grade), meaning “somewhat difficult” with a few steep and technical sections. Upon reaching the summit, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the surrounding Himalayan giants.
Following the summit, the descent takes you over Larke-La Pass into Bhimphedi, then through lush forests toward Dharapani in the Annapurna region, where your trek concludes.
The adventure finishes with a scenic drive back to Kathmandu, marking the end of a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
