Mustang, Nepal – The Uncharted Red Mountains of a Remote Land

Unlike the snow-covered peaks common in most parts of Nepal, the mountains in the Mustang region are uniquely red and stand at around 4,000 meters. The Upper Mustang Trek feels like stepping into another world—one with a dramatic desert-like landscape, ancient culture, and timeless traditions. Here, brown and grey treeless hills roll into the horizon, and traditional homes built with sun-baked mud bricks have stood the test of time.

This mystical region remains untouched by modernity and mass tourism. With its blend of red and white mountain views, Upper Mustang offers a truly breathtaking experience. The area was once the ancient Buddhist Kingdom of Lo, located between Tibet and the Himalayas. Deeply rooted in Tibetan culture, religion, and architecture, Upper Mustang lies in the rain-shadow region of the Annapurna range, receiving only about 400mm of rainfall annually.

Why the Mustang Trek is Special

Until the 1990s, Upper Mustang was restricted to outsiders, which helped preserve its ancient culture and pristine nature. The main highlight of the trek is Lo Manthang, the walled capital of Upper Mustang. From a distance, you’ll see its towering 6-meter-high white wall built centuries ago for protection.

Once inside Lo Manthang, you’ll feel like you've entered a different galaxy—filled with chortens, spinning prayer wheels, a rich history, and people who still follow traditional farming and trade practices. You'll visit the 15th-century Thugchen Gompa, the royal palace, and also explore the Amchi School and Amchi Museum, which reflect traditional Tibetan medicine.

Due to the area's restricted status, the permit is quite expensive, making the trek less accessible for everyone. However, many who have made the journey say it’s worth every penny.

Permit and Trekking Costs

  • Restricted Area Permit: $500 per person for 10 days (mandatory for Upper Mustang).
  • ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Project): $20 per person.
  • TIMS Card: $10 (optional but required if visiting other Annapurna treks).

Other costs include:

  • Guide and porter: $25–$30 per day (including food, lodging, and insurance).
  • Transportation (flights, jeeps, etc.).
  • Food and beverages.
  • Tea house and camping accommodation.
  • Miscellaneous (charging electronics, hot showers, tips, etc.).

Note: Though the trek is more expensive compared to others in Nepal, the experience is truly once-in-a-lifetime and justifies the cost.
